The Story
Several years ago I met a Brazilian girl by the name of Renata. She was the younger sister of a guy who lived in the apartment below mine. We only needed to hang out a couple of times before we decide to start dating. We had fun together for the first few weeks, but then my feelings started to change. It wasn't that Renata said or did anything that caused my feelings to change, they just did so on their own. The only problem was that Renata's feelings for me seemed to be changing too. They seemed to be getting stronger. This may have been in some part due to the fact that I was the first real kiss and the first serious boyfriend that Renata had. When I came to the realization that I wanted to break up with Renata, I tried to play things carefully. Instead of coming right out and saying that my feelings had changed, I simply allowed myself to get more distant. Renata would always sense me pulling away and would believe that she had done something to upset me. When I finally did get to the point where I felt I should tell her it didn't go well. When I said that I thought we should just be friends and not date anymore, she took it to mean that we should continue dating. When I didn't respond to a very tender letter she wrote me (in which she expressed her love for me) she got upset with me. I felt terrible because Renata continued to hang on to the hope that things would work out. After a few weeks I started dating someone else and when Renata found out the results were disastrous. I received a couple nasty emails (which I deserved) and then that was it. I didn't hear from Renata for a long long while. I still have the emails Renata sent me and I still feel bad every time I read them. I still wish that things had gone differently as I never wanted to cause her the pain that I did.
