The Story

Well I met him on vacation at a restaurant in Barbados on December 30, 2009. I had no intention of eating at the restaurant that night, but I noticed him seated there alone, and it hit me like a tidal wave; this overwhelming feeling of 'go there, make the first move (and I never, ever do that), strike up a conversation with him somehow or you'll regret it'. So I asked the waitress to seat me next to the window (which was about 1 table away from where he was. After ordering an appetizer & Martini, I got the courage to ask him where he's from, how long he's staying, etc. He asked me to sit at his table, which I did, and we talked endlessly about our vacation (It was towards the end of our vacations). And after I suggested we swim in the sea at night. Imagination can take you what happened. Mind you this is not normal behaviour for me...I don't pick up strange men on my travels like this. So we spent the next day (New Year's day & night together) until I had to leave. We kept in touch long-distance; we had another vacation (St. Lucia in March). A week after I got back he breaks up...via email. All during this time he bought me the most beautiful designer clothes from Europe, said all the right things, promised we would get married, etc. This crushed me. A few weeks go by, he says all the right things...I take him back, and the relationships on again. He came to see me in Michigan in May. After meeting my parents, and telling them we would marry, (he's 61; I'm 30), he's back home and no more than 2 weeks go by and again...break-up by email. So broken heart twice. Weeks go by, he apologizes, says it's the age difference, his daughters don't approve, etc. He calls, and I take him back like a fool. And I went to see him in September in England. 4 days we spent together; it was supposed to be 14. Come to find out his youngest daughter is claiming 'depression' and he sent me home. It's obvious his daughters are playing games with him, but whatever, what could he do; so I said, well, I didn't come all this way to not spend my time with you; and if you absolutely can't spend your time with me, well I'm going on vacation on my own somewhere. I didn't take all this time off work to just come back home. And if I can't be with him, well, I went to Dubai. All the while while in Dubai he only sent one text asking if I booked in the hotel. Nothing for the remainder of my trip. I was so done and angry. So once back home, he texts if I made it home safe okay, then calls, and we keep in touch until he takes his youngest to Dubai. (I know, spoiled brat, right?) Then I don't hear from him from 2 weeks since he was supposed to return. And there we go with the break-up text message; him stating that he know the relationship will not work years from now. Whatever. I just told him to send my stuff back (I left some clothes at his home because he said he wants me back for the holidays). He did, after some pestering. Its not easy. I still hurt inside and I still do miss him. But now that I'm writing about this, I see what a fool I was. Why I put myself in that position, I don't know. I didn't need him. I have a good-paying job, own a fancy car, and go on fancy vacations on my own. But love is blind, and I fell in love with him the first moment I saw him. And what scares me is that I think I still would take him back. I haven't let my heart be broken in over 10 years. And the first person I trusted in such a long time went ahead and broke my heart. I just hope time will do it's thing and I can be back to my happy self I was before I met him.
