The Story
Early in 2002 I received a 'phone call from an ex-girlfriend I hadn,t heard from in 28 years. I was living on my yacht in Maylands WA, seperated for 8 years, and my 10 yo daughter was staying over with me that W/end.My long lost girlfriend Donna advised me she was leaving her current husband in Port Macquarie NSW, and would return to WA with her 2yo daughter if I would be interested in re-kindling our previous relationship (which lasted 4+years). I'd never forgotten her and instantly agreed. I was 'over the moon' as they say. Cutting a long stoty short, she arrived in WA, in due course, we rented a home & became a family unit. We agreed buying a home was our goal & eventually found a suitable cottage (circa 1910),in Bassendean WA, small, on a main road, but affordable, and moved in late 2002. We had, I believe, an ideal relationship. Our 2 daughters loved each other, we had many friends & worked hard to renovate our home when $$$ would allow. My Father was murdered in 2003 ; his Will left me almost 1/2 million dollars which paid off the mortgage, put a 2 story extn. on the home & allowed us to buy our neighbors back yard when it was strata titled. Donna's & my Wills reflected each was the others beneficiary. Jan 7 2007 was a Sunday. Donna asked all family (hers & mine) to stay away as we were going to have a 'romantic' evening.. She made a special dessert in the afternoon ,homemade passionfruit icecream & mersyndol, whilst I was working on
her car(a 66 vintage Valiant)..We chose 'take-away'as that would give us more time later.. When it came to eating the dessert, it was salty & enedible; she said she must have used salt instead of sugar, & proceeded to wash it down the sink, breaking a glass bowl in her haste..We showered & went to bed; had our romantic interlude & 10 mins later, she got up, went to the en-suite, came back with a large porcelain water pitcher and smashed it down on my head as I was lying half asleep in bed.. Luckily for me, it hit the window sill just above the pillow, breaking into many pieces. She then grabbed the bedside light, which had a heavy brass base & continued her attack. I received 2 large gashes above my left eye before I was able to grab the light from her, throw it away & run for the back door. Yes! run from what I thought was a woman possessed or was suffering from a temporary leave of her senses..I ran!.. I couldn't unlock the back door as I was partially blinded by a lot of blood in my left eye& found it difficult to maintain my balance...I turned to try for the front door only to see Donna comming at me with the WW1 bayonet we kept as a souvenir atop the TV cabinet. I received a number of wounds from slashes before she lunged for my abdomen and I was able to turn quickly when the blade bounced of a rib & I could reach the handle & wrest it from her grip. She sat down rang the police saying she had been attacked, rolled a cigarette & ran outside when she heard the sirens. I was taken to Hospital (RPH), received numerous stitches, given clothing & picked up by the Investigating Detective the following day & taken home. Donna was charged with 'Assault causing grievious bodlly harm'.. I went bail for her til her 1st Court Appearance, believing her actions caused by a mental 'whatever', but cancelledthe bail papers when the Police advised her statement admitted she tried to drug me with Mersyndol. She hired a lawyer for her 2nd.Court hearing where she pleaded guilty, her lawyer saying she was affected by alcohol & prescription drugs, the magistrate believed this & sentenced her to 120 hrs. community based order, & pay court costs. Donna has since returned to PortMacquarie NSW;her daughter, who was with her Father for the Christmas holidays, stayed in NSW & obtained a joint custody order when he heard of events in WA. I never saw my step-daughter again. This unbelievable story received media attention the the 'Sunday Times'(is still on the web) & recently in 'Take 5' magazine. I don't know where I want to go from here, over a year later, I don't know.
