The Story
So it was 7th grade and I was young and hormonal. I wasnt a very popular kid during this period of my life and I was frequently made fun of because of my acne and dandruff.
One Friday night I was watching the X-Files when I got a phone call from a girl by the name of Liz Albrecht. I didnt know Liz very well and was pretty surprised to get a call from me. After some brief small chat Liz told me that she was calling because a friend of hers liked me and wanted to know if I wanted to go out. Liz, it turned out, was calling on behalf of Kait McKenzie, a girl in a couple of my classes that I had been flirting with a little bit. I said Yes! to going out with her (which meant being boyfriend and girlfriend) and hung up the phone feeling somehow more mature. I did, after all, now have a girlfriend. Kait and I were together for all of 2 months before she dumped me. During that two month time period I had never once gotten up the courage to so much as kiss the girl. I wasnt that upset about the breakup as I hadnt really been that involved.
A couple months later (on what I can distinctly remember as a Career Day at the middle school) my good friend Charlie Festa approached me during lunch and told me that he needed to talk to me. He told me that Kait was regretting breaking up and that she wanted to get back together. I told him that I would be happy to go out with her again and just like that I had a girlfriend again.
About a month later we had an end of the year party at Amanda Garveys house. I went with Kait and we spent the entire evening together flirting and having a good time. When the time came for me to leave Kait walked with me for a bit. We hugged and said goodnight and then parted and started heading off (me to a sleep over at Kevin Bagleys house, her to a sleep over of her own). Before Id gotten more than 20 steps away Kait called me back. She said she wanted to give me one last hug, but as we were pulling apart she started kissing me. The kiss didnt last long, but it put me in heaven.
Kait and I continued to date over the next year or so. As we were only 14 or so we spent as much time together as we could and were happy with that. As the end of 8th grade approached we were both excited to see more of each other over the summer before heading to our first year of high school. Or so I thought. The last day of school I was over at Kevin Bagleys were a bunch of my friends had gathered to decide which partys we were going to go to. While there Kait called and asked me how my day was going. After a couple minutes of talking she told me that Liz Albrecht wanted to talk to me. This was the same Liz that had set Kait and I up and I hadnt really spoken with her since that first phone call, so I was again surprised. Liz got on the phone and told me that Kait no longer wanted to date, she was breaking up with me. After dropping this bomb, Liz said, Heres Kait again and passed the phone back to my now ex-girlfriend. I was absolutely crushed. I started to ask Kait what was going on, but was so maddened by the situation that I hung up on her. I sat down on the steps in Kevins basement with my head reeling. A moment later, my friend Andy came down with the phone in his hands and told me that Kait wanted to talk to me. I was confused as I hadnt heard the phone ring. Andy told me that he had been listening in on our conversation and had stayed on the line after I tried to hang up on Kait. On hearing this I punched Andy in the stomach and hung up on Kait; for real this time.
The next couple weeks were tough on me. I spent most of them in our unfinished basement, laying under our ping pong table, trying to piece together what had happened. I had thought everything was going well and couldnt figure out why Kait had done it.
That fall I started high school and found that I made friends with a few of the upper-classmen pretty quickly. I guess my rising popularity piqued Kaits interest because midway through the year she asked me to go out with her again. I said yes again, and it was back on. Things this time were different though. Within a couple months I caught word from some of my friends that Kait had kissed another guy (Tim Morrison) while playing softball with a group of people. Apparently someone hit a the ball behind someones house and Tim and Kait both went to get the ball. When they didnt come back immediately someone poked their head around the corner and saw the two of them making out against the house. When I got word of what had happened I did what any insecure, shy, highschool freshman would do...nothing. I simply started pulling away from Kait. I tried avoiding conversations with her at school, I avoided her phone calls, and things at partys were awkward. After several months of this she broke up with me at our towns annual Relay for Life. This third and final breakup didnt leave me sad, it left me relieved. I guess I could have done things differently, but I didnt, and thats the story of my first broken heart.
