The last month has been a difficult one, but I don’t speak just for myself. Not only was I dumped, but so were a number of my friends. Lee was broken up with by phone as his long distance girlfriend told him his was too good to be dating someone with so many problems. Amanda was dumped by her boyfriend the day after she had predicted that he would dump her. Heather wasn’t so much dumped as she was ditched by a guy she kissed. Stacy was dumped by her boy. and of course I was dumped by my girl. Is it just the time of year? Is it so hot in Utah that people get grouchy and decide they can’t handle being around someone else? Or, is it maybe that because it’s hot that people go out more, meet new people and decide that there are other options to be pursued? I don’t know what the reason is, but it sucks. Amidst all the destruction left by these break ups I have been reminded that lonely hearts still beat the same. Thanks Sarah, Russell, and Georgia for helping us all through these trying summer months.

The song, “Jet Ski Accidents” was so simple that I had a hard time figuring out why I liked it. I’m pretty sure that its simplicity had a lot to do with my liking. I’ve also realized that another big reason I like the music is Khaela Maricich. I like her voice, her melodies, and her lyrics. And now that I’m once again on the emotional mend, I find myself paying more attention to the voice, melodies and especially lyrics. And yes, I’m pretty sure that you’ve always been out of my league…and for that matter I was out of your league too.

It’s sad but true. I’ve been dumped again. While the breakup came as a surprise, it wasn’t without warrant. I’m afraid I wasn’t being as good of a boyfriend as I should have been. I was too busy, I wasn’t as affectionate as I should have been, and I didn’t listen when I should have. I think when you get dumped and you realize it’s your own fault it makes things even worse. I’ve had the last couple weeks to sit and dwell on things and try and imagine how they would have turned out differently if I had only realized the error of my ways a little sooner. Anyway, my head is much better suited for finding music when my heart is broken. While I was driving today I turned on a rap station to avoid a talk-radio segment about marriage and heard this song by Sean Kingston. Sure he sampled the bass line from a classic: “Stand By Me”. Sure his voice has been pitch matched so it sounds like he’s singing in tune. But, can you beat the following lines:

You’re way to beautiful girl, that’s why it’ll never work / You had me suicidal, suicidal; when you said it’s over / Damn all these beautiful girls, they only wanna do ya dirt / They’ll have you suicidal, suicidal when they say it’s over.

Enjoy!

My younger sister got married last week to a guy named Spencer. They had a nice ceremony and later that evening had a nice reception. It was a little weird to see my sister married. It also weird to think about the course her relationship with Spencer had followed. The relationship started off by letter and email. Hannah lived in California, and Spencer lived in Las Vegas. Hannah met one of Spencer’s friends, and this friend suggested that she start writing Spencer. She did. She wrote him letters and he wrote back. Then, on one trip from California to Utah, Hannah stopped in Las Vegas. She went to the house and met Spencer in person for the first time. The relationship went well for a while, but after a year or more took a turn for the worse. I can still remember my sister’s howling crying the day that she and Spencer broke up the first time. Hannah was devastated. Shortly after the break up, she went to Scotland for a study abroad. I got word that Spencer had gone to visit her and that things were on the mend. Then, a few months later, another bad break up. After Hannah graduated, I caught word that both she and Spencer would moving to Utah. I thought it might be coincidence that they were both moving here at the same time, but it wasn’t. They moved here to be together; after several months they got engaged, and now–several months later–they’re married. They put together a mix CD to hand out as a party favor, and on the CD is this song. I guess they figured that heart break was an important part of their relationship.

I tend to play a lot of music in the aftermath, and for some reason this song seems to come on at just the right time. These last couple times the lyrics have really seemed to apply as well. Maybe it’s just generic enough of a song that it applies to everyone, or maybe I’m just “pathetic” enough that the same thing happened to me twice. Either way I think it’s a pretty good song and singing it at the top of my lungs while driving around town feeling sorry for myself has helped me feel better.

Pretty Pathetic:
