The Smoking Popes

The Smoking PopesSo, the last couple of times I’ve been dumped I’ve had a similar experience. I tend to play a lot of music in the aftermath, and for some reason this song seems to come on at just the right time. These last couple times the lyrics have really seemed to apply as well. Maybe it’s just generic enough of a song that it applies to everyone, or maybe I’m just “pathetic” enough that the same thing happened to me twice. Either way I think it’s a pretty good song and singing it at the top of my lungs while driving around town feeling sorry for myself has helped me feel better.

Valentine’s Day

This time last year I had just been dumped. In fact it was the Saturday before Valentine’s Day. I was waiting at my house for my girlfriend to come over so that we could go out on a double date. Earlier that day the gift I’d bought her for Valentine’s Day came in the mail. When she came over that afternoon I could tell something was wrong. When I asked her about it, she told me that she was was sorry but she was still in love with her ex-boyfriend. She asked if we could take a break for a little while so that she could figure things out. I’d had some bad experiences in the past with “taking a break” so I told her that I preferred all or nothing. She chose nothing. I gave her the gift I’d bought her (and a couple days later left the flowers I’d ordered on her doorstep) and she left. So, last year Valentine’s Day kind of sucked and that’s why I chose this song. Just remember, “everybody plays the fool, sometime.”
